Red Foxes - Reproduction

Red Foxes breed for life and form family groups that consist of the breeding pair and the pups. The breeding season is usually in late winter. The species gives birth in a den that is specially prepared. It should be large enough to supply a litter and the mother with sufficient space. The females enter the estrus that lasts from 1 to 6 days. The copulation lasts for about 20 minutes and is usually accompanied by vocalization. It should be said that the estrus time is different within different habitats and varies within the geographic range.

Fights between the males usually occur during the breeding season. The female may mate with different partners, yet she forms a family with only one male. The egg is usually implanted in 10-14 days after the successful copulation. The gestation period is about 51-53 days. In a period when the female gives birth to the cubs, the male is usually around the den. He supplies the family with food, yet never enters the den.

The average litter size is 5 pups. However, the litter produced by the Red Fox may be as large as 15 pups. They are born blind and weigh about 50-150 grams. The eyes are open by the age of 9-14 days. They emerge from the maternity den by the age of 4-6 weeks and learn all the necessary skills from the mother. Red Fox pups stay with the mother until autumn and have to leave her once she is ready for another pregnancy. Red Foxes are sexually mature by the age of 10 months.
