Red Foxes

It is believed that this species was introduced to Northern America from Europe for hunting purposes. It was a popular game at that time. The species can now be hunted during a sanctioned hunting season. Hunters usually pursue the Red Fox on foot or horse. Dogs are a great aid during a hunt. Although the Red Fox is rarely killed, hunting remains one of the most popular of recreation activities.

Since the time of its introduction to the continent, the Red Fox has been expanding its range and has become a nuisance in some areas. The species is believed to harm poultry, yet contrary to common belief, the Red fox does not impact poultry production greatly. The Red Fox fur is of great economic importance to humans. Many farms are involved in raising Red Foxes for the fur.

Some time ago, Red Foxes were treated as pests and many management plans were developed to keep the population of the species in control. Although Red Fox management is still important, many people started to realize that the functions of the Red Fox in the wild are needed. Nowadays, it is acknowledged that Red Foxes are an important link in the food chain of any ecosystem.

Habitat: Forests, tundra, prairie, farmlands, and open areas.
Life Span: Usually 2-3 years in the wild.
Litter Size: Up to 15 pups can be born in a litter with the average being 5 pups.
